    How does a DSC Work?

Signature is a word not unknown to us, but we are not fully aware of the details of Digital Signatures. We provide our signature as a specimen of our identity so that it cannot be forged by others. However, this is not possible in the digital world since paper access is not available for signatures. For this very purpose, we rely on digital signatures.

Digital Signatures serve various purposes. They disclose the IP address from which your signature was uploaded and specify the particular computer from which the file came. Since the signature is encrypted, it specifies the document to which it is attached and automatically checks if there have been any modifications before receiving the digital signature. Your digital signature offers the facility of a checksum, through which you can check the authentication of the digital signature. For example, if we hack a website, steal a file, and amend the information before sending it to another party, the file cannot be verified as original or checked for changes. However, in the case of a digital signature, if there is any amendment to the original file, the checksum allows one to verify if any modification has been made. As a result, your signature cannot be hacked or unethically used by hackers.

Apart from the above feature, the digital signature comprises two other specifications: public key encryption and private key encryption. Suppose Person 1 has a file that needs to be sent to Person 2. In this case, private key encryption comes into use. In this process, when Person 1 sends the file, they share the password of the file with Person 2. So, if Person 3 receives the same file, it will be of no use to them since they will not have the password for the file. Whereas Person 2 will easily decode the file sent by Person 1 and use it as required.

Now, coming to the public key. My computer will act as both a public and private key. Files that are open for viewing will be easily accessible to anyone. However, if I lock my file for personal use, it will work as a private key. In public key encryption, my private file can be encrypted with the receiver’s public key. In this way, the receiver will know who sent the file, be able to decode it easily, and the risk of theft will be reduced. The certificate authority authenticates the digital signature software. A duplicate of a digital signature cannot be obtained, so the security of the digital signature is very important. You should never hand over your digital signature to any random person, as this signature serves as an identity, similar to your debit card or Aadhaar card.
